episode 4 American Song: SWING BLUE (1930 - 1939)

"Against the backdrop of the Great Depression, and the explosion of American media (both radio and film), Swing Blue is a screwball comedy of romance, both reflective of the stories told to lead American minds away from their troubles and of the period of cultural expansion as the shadow of European misery teases the horizon of the US."

episode 4 will be at THE GREENE SPACE
44 Charlton Street, New York, NY
(corner of Varick Street)

“Clever new satire…sharp comedy…The smart and fun production features an excellent cast directed with precision by Jim Simpson.”
-The Huffington Post

“Heresy hits the funny bone…the cast and Jim Simpson’s brisk direction make it fun.”
-The Daily News

“The arguments made are compelling — as well as highly critical of the status quo. And Gurney includes just enough humor to make this information easily digestible while not diluting its bite.”
-Theatermania

“Solid direction, engaging performances, clever dialogue, well-articulated ideas and an abundance of jokes.”
-Stage and Cinema

“A consistently amusing and well-played take on the state of the union.”

Steel Magnolias illustrates how the lives of six distinctly different women interweave via the small town gossip.  Filled with hilarious Southern repartee, the play draws on the town's underlying strength-and love-which gives its characters, the special quality to make them truly touching, funny and marvelously amiable company in good times and in bad.

MORE THAN A SONG: The Music That Integrated America

Tue-Wed, May 17-18, 7:30pm
The Allen Room
The second concert curated by Michael Feinstein journeys through the important transition in popular music when white composers like Irving Berlin and George Gershwin brought jazz to Broadway, often introducing African American jazz performers and composers like Fats Waller and Eubie Blake to the American mainstream for the first time. This unique concert illustrates the role of Broadway as the social engine that created an alliance society could embrace in song if not yet in real life, and will showcase classic songs such as “The Birth of the Blues,” “Ol’ Man River,” and “Harlem on My Mind,” among others. Featuring Quentin Earl Darrington (Ragtime [2009 Revival]), Allan Harris, and Karen Ziemba (Contact, Curtains). (Michael Feinstein is NOT performing.)
